Biography

Little is known, as yet, about Edward Gurr's service other than he came from Middlesex and enlisted in the 2nd/5th Battalion DLI.

2/5 DLI was originally raised in Darlington in August 1914 as a Reserve battalion. In November 1915, however, it landed in Salonika in Greece as part of an Allied force sent to assist the Serbian Army. Little happened on this front and the main enemy was disease, especially malaria. In September 1918, however, the Allied force advanced and within weeks both Bulgaria and Turkey had surrendered. 2/5 DLI was then sent to occupy the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Varna, where Edward Gurr's photograph was taken in November 1918.

This is the only set of medals to this battalion in the Regimental collection.
